Where are you now? Nanih Waiya Attendance Center, Nanih Waiya, MS

Why did you decide to come to MSU and pursue a degree in education?

I have lived about 45 minutes from Starkville my entire life.  Over the years-through many school trips, sporting, summer camps, and weekend trips Starkville/Mississippi State has begun to feel like home.  It is home.  I have a passion for working with children and a desire to instill in the knowledge and curiosity needed for success.  I also have a passion for reading and writing, and I saw these things as the building blocks to the understanding of all other subjects.  I saw a need for good English teachers that can help students build the proper foundations.  I ccould not imagine a better place to begin a career that would allow me to do this than Mississippi State.

What do you want people to know about you?

I want people to know, first and foremost, that I am unapologetically a Christian.  I am redeemed because of the sacrifice Jesus made for me. I graduated from Nanih Waiya Attendance Center after which I attended East Central Community College.  I love my family which includes my pets more than anything.

Who has had the biggest impact on your life? Why?

When I was 10, my dad passed away from complications during a routine procedure.  He had a rare autoimmune disorder, so he was sick for years before he passed.  During those years, I watched my mom work, care for her sick husband, and then two small children. She became Superwoman in my eyes.  Since Daddy died, she has proved that over and over again. She has shown me what it means to be a Godly woman who loves her children more than anything. She has been mom and dad when needed, showing me how to adapt to situations and role with the punches life throws at you. She taught me the meaning of working hard, being honest, and loving unconditionally. My mom has had the greatest impact on my life.

What activities were you involved in?

While in school I worked at The Jewel Shoppe, a fine jewelry store in Louisville, Mississippi.  I also volunteered with the children's ministry in my church as well as Neshoba County General Hospital. During summers I was able to volunteer at Camp Happy Days in Shocco Springs, Alabama-a camp for children in the care of Alabama's Department of Human Resources.
